After you arrive
PR card renewal and permanent resident travel document (PRTD)
Your PR card is your proof of status when you fly back to Canada. It is usually valid for five years. To keep permanent resident status, you need to be in Canada for at least 730 days in any five years. If you are outside Canada without a valid card, you need a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return.
Who needs a PR card renewal or a PRTD?
- Your first card has not arrived within IRCC's timeline.
- Your PR card has expired or is about to.
- Your PR card was lost or stolen.
- You are outside Canada and your card has expired, was lost, or never arrived, and you need a PRTD to come back.
How do you renew a PR card or get a PRTD?

What documents do you need to renew a PR card?
- Your current or expired PR card, or your confirmation of permanent residence.
- Your travel history for the last five years.

IRCC sets the exact list for each application. We give you a checklist for your own file.

- Gaps or errors in the travel history.
- Photos or forms that do not meet IRCC's requirements.

Common questions
Do I lose PR status if my PR card expires?
No. An expired card does not end your status. But you need a valid card or a PRTD to board a flight back to Canada.
What counts toward the 730 days?
Days you are physically in Canada. Some time abroad also counts, for example time spent travelling with a spouse who is a Canadian citizen.
Can I travel while my renewal is in process?
Yes, but you need a valid card or a PRTD to fly back. Talk to us before you book.
